Getting Out of a Lifelong Fashion Rut

Fashion, like many other things, involves making mistakes and getting things wrong. However, unlike most things, it’s on full display for people to observe and judge, considering the person wearing them isn’t a social recluse or a misanthropic hermit. With the assumption that a large percentage of people aren’t in that category, clothing is an integral part of life whether someone’s into fashion or not.

A significant part of my realization was how differently someone could get treated wearing one outfit in favor of another. Maybe you’ll have varying opinions on if someone rushed past you in line at a coffee shop wearing a slim fit, cashmere blended Italian suit or dress versus the same person in stained, faded, loosely fitted sweats. Okay, perhaps you’re the type of person that’s more agitated about waiting an additional few minutes in line than giving a little leeway to either which person.

Regardless, these judgments or favored treatments still appear all the time in life without much notice, such as assigning specific labels to people based on their attire (i.e., metalhead, preppy, jock) or making class or personality assumptions (i.e., lower or upper-class, cultural tellings, shallow, intelligent).

Normalcy in western countries would be getting into denim jeans and putting on a comfortably fitted graphic tee or sleeved shirt. You will likely spot these or very similar clothing combinations when stepping outside your home or maybe even into your closet. The level of comfort, I’m sure a lot of are used to and in, including me.

While I may have already made a few steps in heading in a different direction because of the media and literature I started consuming on the topic (in addition to some hefty purchases I’ve made), compared to a fashionista, I’m still starting on this aesthetic and personal journey.

If your experience is similar to mine, where you never had virtually any interest in fashion before and seemingly developed it overnight, you’ve opened yourself up to the heaps of information it presents to admire it truly. And along with it, quite a few headaches when trying to grasp at the past, present, and future of all that constitutes fashion.

However, unlike remembering the historical facts about an event you could care less about for your 7th-grade class, there will always be a personal reward at the end. That is, engaging yourself in a topic full of art and personality that’ll track with you all your life and present itself visibly forward.

An amiable and persistent aim would be to take chunks out of this topic to observe its details. Still, it’s just as essential to delve into it similarly with a bit of a subjective approach. Both encompass the glamour, timelessness, and practicality of fashion which, at least for me, would be worth my time discussing and engaging in with much personal avail.
